Ancient folklore tells of the acai tree, and a tribal chief who was forced to make a decision.  His people were starving and there wasn’t enough food to go around.  The king declared that no more babies could be born until the food shortage ended.  Violation of this ruling would result in the death of the baby.  The chief’s own daughter decided to have a baby.   The chief declared that the baby must die.  The baby was killed and the chiefs daughter was distraught.  One day she heard a baby crying deep in the woods.  She followed the sound and found a tree filled with dark purple fruit.  She knew that this tree had enough food to save her people, and yet was upset that she hadn’t found it in time to save her baby.  She died at the foot of the tree.  The fruit of the tree saved the village and made the people stronger than they had ever been.  The tree was named Açai in honor of the chief’s daughter.

While this tale is simply an old Brazilian tale, it shows the significance of the Açai fruit to ancient peoples.  Acai has been eaten for thousands of years and is thought to increase strength, vitality and overall health.  This dark purple fruit grows on a native South American palm tree.  The açai berries, which are sometimes over 25 feet in the air, are harvested from these trees by hand.  Açai is a prized fruit all over the world.  This is likely due to the fact that açai is a valuable superfood filled with nutrition.
The acai berry is filled with antioxidants.  ORAC testing has proven that acai berries have higher antioxidant levels than red wine.  These açai berries are especially full of anthocyanins, a type of antioxidant found in red wine.

  •     The anthocyanins found in açai are believed to lower the occurrence of diabetic retinopathy and the formation of fibrous breast tissue.
  •     The high concentration of linoleic acid in açai is believed to lower bad cholesterol while raising the good levels.
  • Açai has more anthocyanins than red wine or blueberries.

Testing has shown that diets high in antioxidants and low in saturated fats are the best diets for your health.  Açai is a great way to get the antioxidants that you need for a healthy balanced diet.  This superfruit has been prized for centuries for its health promoting benefits.  Those regularly consuming açai report increased immune function, energy levels and satisfaction with life.

Acaiberries may be able to help combat aging, due to the high antioxidant levels.  The omega fatty acids in açai may lead to better heart and digestive health.  Additionally, açai contains many vitamins and minerals which help to support overall health and wellness.  The high antioxidant levels of açai are believed to show beneficial results in the treatment of cancer.  Researchers at the University of Florida found that extracts from açai caused leukemia cells to self destruct during lab testing more than 80% of the time.
Many people find açai to be delicious.  The acai berries are often compared to chocolate in flavor.  The berries have a rich and creamy texture and are commonly used in a freeze dried powder or in drinks and supplements.  Many find that their favorite desserts are more delicious, and nutritious, when a scoop of Açai is added prior to baking.  It is especially delicious in brownies and cakes.  Açai can also be added to yogurt, cereal, smoothies, milkshakes and more.  Açai is a delicious way to enjoy a healthier diet.  A little açai goes a long way since this fruit is jam packed with nutrients, vitamins, minerals and antioxidants.
