Have you ever heard of amino acids?  Amino acids are molecules that serve as the building blocks for proteins.  Basically amino acids link together to form proteins.  Amino acids are an important part of our diets.  Without amino acids, serious health concerns may arise.
In nature there are hundreds of different amino acids.  In fact, our bodies require about 24 of these acids as a part of our regular nutrition. Some amino acids can be created by the body and others can only be supplied by consumption.  The amino acids that we must eat are called essential amino acids.  The essential amino acids are isoleucine, leucine, tryptophan, valine, threonine, methionie and lysine.
Proteins are made from 20 different amino acids.  These amino acids all combine to make a chain which is also known as a protein.  All the required amino acids must be present for a protein chain to be formed.
Amino acids are important for our overall health and wellness.  In fact, amino acids are essential for cell growth, cell repair and maintenance. Since all of our body tissues are made up of amino acids, they are necessary to create and sustain any part of the body.  Specific amino acids also possess roles for overall health.  One example is the amino acid alanine.  Alanine is responsible for regulating blood sugar caused by protein digestion.  Alanine also strengthens the immune system. Alanine is only one of many amino acids each with specific health benefits and purposes.
Amino acids also plan an important role in determining the flavor of foods.  Monosodium glutamate is an amino acid that is regularly added to foods as a flavor enhancer.
The first amino acid discovered was called asparagine.  It was discovered initially in asparagus.  This and several other amino acids were discovered in the 1800s.  Since then, many more amino acids have been discovered.
More study is needed to find out the many purposes of amino acids.
Some essential functions include:

  •     Tryptophan is required for serotonin production.
  •     Phenylaline is used in the creation of phenylproponoids which aid in plant metabolism.
  •     Taurine is important for brain function.

Amino acids can be obtained from many sources including plants, meats and even superfoods. Superfoods can be a great source of amino acids as well as other vitamins and minerals essential for optimal health.
Superfoods are foods that are filled with nutrition.  This could mean that they have many amino acids, extra vitamins or an abundance of minerals.  They often commonly have an abundance of antioxidants as well.  Adding a few superfoods to an otherwise nutritious diet is a great way to make sure that you get the daily amino acids that you require.  Without these amino acids, health problems could develop including weakness, cellular degeneration and more.  Amino acids are an essential part of every diet.
